The “should you DIY your own brand?” debate has been going around in circles for years. And the answer is almost always either a confident “no, leave it to professional graphic designers!” or an overly optimistic “yes! Canva makes it so easy!”
After working with 650+ business owners on their branding and graphics, I have a much more nuanced answer. And it comes down to two things most people are missing, not creativity, not budget, not even the right tools.
In this blog I’m covering the two design traps that trip up even the most motivated business owners, and if you’re stuck in either of them, no amount of Canva access or AI tools is going to fix your designs.

The first type doesn’t believe they can do it at all. They’re not “creative,” they’ve never touched Canva, they don’t have a design bone in their body. Sound familiar?
The second type is the opposite; they trust the tools too much. They pick a Canva template, swap out a few colours, call it a logo, and wonder six months later why their brand feels off and their business isn’t growing the way they hoped.
Both positions are understandable. Neither one is going to get you where you want to go.
The business owners who build brands that actually work aren’t the most tech-savvy or the most naturally creative. They’re the ones who learn the process and treat design tools as a starting point, not the solution.
There’s a reason 78% of consumers still prefer human-made graphics over AI-generated ones. And the term “AI slop” has reportedly gone up ninefold in the last year alone. People can feel the difference, even when they can’t name it.
And Canva templates? They have real limitations. They’re not unique. They’re not trademarkable. If you don’t know how to export the right file types, they’re not even that usable. You choose a template in the wrong colour, try to adapt it, can’t quite get the blue right, and then you don’t know what shades to pull through to your social posts… and suddenly your whole visual identity feels inconsistent and a little bit everywhere.
The tools aren’t the problem. It’s the lack of strategy.
Here’s something that genuinely surprises people: I’ve been obsessed with design for 12+ years, and I can’t draw. It genuinely does not matter, because design isn’t drawing.
Design is strategic thinking. It’s choosing a font someone else made. Picking an image someone else shot. Finding an icon someone else illustrated. And knowing how to put those things together so they communicate something specific, to someone specific.
That’s a learnable skill. And it’s one I’ve watched 650+ students develop… including students who had never designed anything in their lives before walking through my course.
In fact, the students in my Co+Creation Design Club regularly start picking up design errors before I do; things like mismatched line thicknesses on icons, or a colour that’s just slightly off.
Not because they’re naturally talented, but because they’ve been building their design muscle as they watch me.

Most business owners trying to DIY their brand aren’t doing the wrong things. They’re doing the right things in the wrong order.
Trying to build a logo before deciding on colours. Choosing colours before knowing their target audience. Posting to social media before they even have a brand. All of these feel productive in the moment.
But they build on unstable foundations… and sooner or later, something doesn’t match, or doesn’t connect, or has to be redone.
The right order, the way I teach it in DIY Design My Biz, looks something like this:
Every step informs the next one. Skipping a step means going back later.
Knowing what order to do things in is the single most important thing you can give yourself before touching any design tool.
A brand isn’t really a brand until it’s used. A logo sitting in a Canva file or in a designer’s email isn’t doing anything for your business. A colour palette no one sees isn’t building recognition. A font that never appears on your social media posts isn’t communicating anything to anyone.
When you learn to design your own brand and understand the process behind it, you’re not just creating a logo. You’re building the skills to create every graphic, every social post, every promotional piece that comes after, without having to pay someone thousands of dollars a month or let things go unpublished because it all feels too hard.
One of my favourite examples of this is a client who came to me a couple of years ago. She was around 70. She’d never touched Canva. She wanted me to design her brand, and when I said I wasn’t taking on design clients at the time, she was pretty sceptical about doing it herself.
But she took a bet on herself, went through my DIY course, and she not only built an incredible brand… she’s still creating her own social media posts from her own templates years later. She built a business she loves in her retirement. And it didn’t happen because she suddenly discovered a hidden design talent. It happened because she learned the right steps.
That’s what I want for you.
If you’re ready to take your first step, my free masterclass, Design Tools to Get to $100K, covers three common design mistakes, my exact branding order, and a live Canva demonstration on making templates genuinely unique.
