Rebranding your business can sound both thrilling and a tad terrifying. On one hand, you get a do-over – a fresh start to recalibrate your brand’s visual identity and strategic direction. On the other hand, it’s easy to stumble into rebranding nightmares that cost time, money, and maybe even a bit of your sanity. But fret not! I’m here to guide you through it with some expert tips and a dose of wisdom. Let’s dive into the mistakes you absolutely need to dodge!
Picture this: You hire a top-notch designer or perhaps, you’re bravely doing it yourself on Canva (you go, Glen Coco!). But months later, you’re back at square one because your brand doesn’t fit your business anymore. Nightmare, right? One major blunder that leads to this situation is diving in without knowing exactly what you need.
Before you start sketching logos or selecting colours, gain clarity on your business goals and target audience. Where do you see your business in a year? Who are your customers? What do they like? Get clear, get specific, and avoid rebranding regret town.
Yes, we all love pretty things – unicorns, fairy lights, and that trendy logo design with watercolour effects. But a brand that looks good doesn’t necessarily work well. One of my clients once chose a super beautiful logo that, unfortunately, didn’t resonate with her audience. Guess what? She had to rebrand again soon after.
So, remember: your logo isn’t for you. It’s for your audience. Sure, blend a bit of your personal taste, but prioritise what will captivate and connect with your target market. AND what will work best in the situations you need to use your logo.
Scrolling through Instagram can give you serious design envy. All those beautiful brands with floral logos and chic fonts – it’s tempting to mimic them. But mimicking spells trouble. If your brand looks like a carbon copy of others in your niche, say goodbye to differentiation.
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, but add your unique spin to it. Take inspiration, but blend in elements that scream you. Research what your niche is doing and then create a design that fits yet stands out.
Remember those watercolour logos with the cursive fonts? They were all the rage… 10 years ago. Trends ebb and flow, but solid branding stands the test of time. Leaning too hard into current trends can quickly date your brand, making it look outmoded faster than you can say “fidget spinner.”
Incorporate trends, sure, but focus on timeless design elements. Invest in a strong concept behind your logo that can be subtly updated to stay relevant, without the need for drastic overhauls every few years.
You know that feeling when you’ve added too many toppings on your pizza, and it’s just a big mess? That’s what happens when you put too much into your logo. Keep it simple. The most iconic logos are often the simplest – think Apple, Nike, or McDonald’s. They are versatile, recognizable, and timeless.
Stick to 1 or 2 concepts, a couple of fonts, and a colour palette that works. Save the bells and whistles for other elements of your brand.
File types matter, folks. When you’re DIY-ing your logo or hiring a budget designer, you might end up without the right file formats. A crisp, versatile logo in a vector file (like SVG) can be resized without losing quality. You’ll also need transparent backgrounds, different colour variations, and high-quality formats to ensure your logo looks smashing on all platforms – from business cards to billboards.
You’ve got a shiny new brand, and now it’s time for the big reveal. But don’t just blurt it out like it’s a surprise party. Strategically launch your brand with teasers, sneak peeks, and a well-planned rollout. This keeps your audience in the loop and builds excitement without confusing them.
Think of your rebrand as introducing a new character in a TV series – you don’t just plop them in; you build anticipation, right? (Here’s my take on how to launch strategically).
A brand is more than just a logo. It’s your fonts, colours, elements, style, and overall vibe. If you only focus on the logo, you’ll find yourself lost when designing social media posts, websites, presentations, and more.
Define your brand elements and style to ensure cohesive and consistent visuals everywhere your brand shows up. Remember, your audience won’t just remember a logo; they’ll remember the full experience your brand offers.
So, there you have it! Avoid these common mistakes to create a polished, professional, and powerful brand. And if you need a hand or a creative buddy, I’m just a message away at the Co Creation Design Club. Let’s create a brand that not only shines but stands the test of time.
