Are you feeling stuck in the mud when it comes to designing your new logo? Whether you’re DIYing it or working with a designer, I know that creating a logo can sometimes feel like you’re trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded. But don’t worry, I got you!
In this third instalment of our rebranding series, we’re diving right into the nitty-gritty of brainstorming a strategic and beautiful logo for your business. Logos are like the faces of our brands, and getting them right is crucial because, believe it or not, we don’t get second chances when it comes to first impressions!
I’m sharing the exact steps I take as a professional designer to help my clients, and even my students, craft logos that are versatile, simple, conceptual, and unique.
We’ll break down the essential four parts of a good logo, chat about the importance of research and mind mapping, and even get our hands a bit dirty (figuratively speaking) with some sketching before diving into the design software.
So grab your favourite sketchpad and let’s turn that logo dream into reality! And remember—simplicity and versatility are your new best friends.
Before leaping into the design pool, rewind and immerse yourself in Episodes 1 and 2 of our rebranding series. These episodes will help you assess if your business genuinely needs a rebrand and introduce foundational steps to start the design process. Why? Because rebranding isn’t a walk in the park; it’s a marathon that requires clarity and direction. We’re talking research, audience insights, Pinterest mood boards, and plenty of thoughtfulness.

Ready to build your masterpiece? Great! Meet the Four Logo Puzzle Pieces:
Versatility: Your logo isn’t a one-trick pony. It’s got to strut its stuff across multiple platforms and sizes. From website favicons to billboards, your logo should look smashing, no matter the canvas.
Simplicity: Avoid the temptation to cram every bit of your brand’s personality into one design. Instead, keep it clean, simple, and easy on the eyes. Remember the iconic Coca-Cola logo? Simple yet unforgettable.
Conceptual: Your logo should tell a story, representing your brand in a way that’s meaningful and resonant. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about connecting on a conceptual level.
Uniqueness: No copycats allowed! Your logo must be distinct, something that can be trademarked and makes your business easily recognisable.
Begin the creative journey with thorough research. Understand your audience, explore visual elements, and dig deep into your brand’s “why.” Then, it’s time for some good old-fashioned mind mapping.
Grab a piece of paper and start jotting down everything your business stands for. From there, brainstorm visuals that represent those concepts.
For instance, a speaking coach might jot down “confidence,” “communication,” and “stage presence,” translating them into microphones, speech bubbles, and stages.
Get those creative juices flowing by sketching your ideas. Even if you’re not the next Picasso, simple sketches can help your brain think outside the digital box. Combine elements from your mind map and see what strikes gold.
Once you have a few promising sketches, fire up Canva or your design software of choice. Remember, handmade icons and custom creations trump generic Canva elements. Your goal is a logo that’s uniquely your own.
With a digital draft in hand, start experimenting. Test different variations—horizontal, vertical, icon-only, text-only—and ensure they look great in various sizes and colour schemes. Head to your target audience for feedback, refining your design based on their insights.
