Here’s something most people don’t want to hear…
Your branding rules aren’t just for when you feel like it. They’re not guidelines.
They’re one of the BIGGEST drivers of trust, recognisability and sales in your business.
But… and this is a big but… they don’t have to feel suffocating either.
If you’ve ever felt like branding rules are too rigid (or if Canva’s font dropdown is your weakness), this blog is for you.
I’m walking you through what branding rules actually are, when they’re worth holding tight to, and when you can bend without breaking trust.

Think of your branding rules as your visual roadmap, the non-negotiables that keep your content looking like you no matter where or how you show up.
I always teach my clients to focus on these four things:
When used consistently, these four tools save you time (no more overthinking font pairings) and build a brand your audience recognises instantly, which is gold when you’re trying to grow trust online.

We often hear how important creativity is in business. And it is.
But when it comes to design? Consistency trumps creativity, every single time.
You could have the most beautiful post… but if it doesn’t look like it belongs to your brand, your audience is starting from scratch. Again.
Every. Single. Time.
And that means it’ll take way longer to build that oh-so-crucial trust.
In fact, stats show people need 8–12 touchpoints before they feel ready to purchase.
If your graphics change with every post, they’re not getting 8–12 recognisable moments… they’re getting 12 new introductions.
See the problem?

Short answer: YES.
In fact, if you’re DIYing your brand, you need these rules even more.
Without them, you’ll spend hours stuck in Canva deciding between fonts and scrolling endlessly for a template that “feels right.”
When your branding rules are clear and used consistently, they actually save you time. And yes, they still allow room for creativity, you’re just working within beautiful, strategic boundaries.
Alright, let’s talk about the moments where flexibility is okay… because I’m not here to hand you a branding prison.
Here are a few places where bending the rules makes sense:
1. Platform Limitations (like websites and emails)
Some platforms don’t allow custom fonts. If your site builder or email software doesn’t support your brand font, choose the closest match. For example, if your brand font is Poppins, pick a similar sans serif and roll with it.
Bonus tip: Stick to your exact brand colours instead, those are usually easy to upload.
2. Instagram Reels + Stories
Creating every story or Reel in Canva? Nope. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
Instead, pick the closest native font available and use it every time. That repetition still builds visual consistency, even without perfection.
You can even upload a screenshot of your brand colours into Instagram and use the eyedropper tool…super simple, super smart.
3. Seasonal Content or Collabs
Doing a festive post or a co-branded Instagram collab? That’s okay.
You can bend your look a little as long as it still feels like you. Don’t lose your whole brand identity in the tinsel… keep your fonts, some brand colours, and a hint of your style.
Wondering whether you should break the branding rule or not?
Here’s the test I run every time, and it’s going to save you heaps of second-guessing.
Is it possible for me to follow my branding rule here with a little effort?
If yes… do it. No shortcuts just because it’s hard.
Will breaking this rule confuse my audience or help them connect with me faster?
If it confuses? Nope. Stick with the rule.
If it helps build connection (like a quick win collab or easier tech workaround), then go for it.

If you’re bored of your brand… that might mean you’re finally being consistent.
So resist the urge to switch fonts every second post.
Hold the line when Canva tries to lure you into fresh templates.
Stick to your strategy, not your feelings.
Because the goal isn’t to be entertained by your brand… it’s to build recognition and grow trust.
