Imagine this: toting a baby around while having your most successful launch in your 10 years in business. Sounds like a wild dream, right? Well, six months into juggling a new-born and a thriving business, I’m living proof that it’s possible.
I’m sharing the real-deal insights of living this beautiful, chaotic dream *chaotic being the key word*. If you’re thinking about balancing a thriving business with the joys (and chaos) of motherhood, I’d be honoured to share some of my experience with you.
Back story: I’m currently 6 months post-partum and into becoming a mum to 2. I have a beautiful (almost 4-year-old) daughter, and now my baby boy. I’ve had my business now for over 10 years which has all been working up to this dream of being a mum and business owner. My business model features an everygreen online course and a virtual design studio with freelance designers working for me (I also have the support of a VA, success coach and video editor).
When was the last time you said, “Thank you, life, for this beautiful chaos?” Trust me, I get it—balancing a baby and a business can sometimes feel like spinning plates (endlessly). But practicing gratitude, especially during the tumultuous times, has been a lifesaver for me. It’s essential to reframe feelings of resentment towards your responsibilities into a wellspring of gratitude.
Reflection isn’t just for mirrors, my friends! Regularly evaluating your business and personal life ensures you’re steering clear of burnout. Take time to ask critical questions about your strategies. Is your workload sustainable? Are there things you need to let go of or tweak?
Change is the only constant, especially in motherhood and business. Don’t be afraid to pivot. If something’s not aligning with your needs, switch it up! Whether it’s limiting intakes, outsourcing tasks, or re-thinking the role of social media, make sure it serves you.
Those who know me know that I can thrive on a pinch of spontaneity. Case in point: launching a freebie, masterclass, and program within a couple of months of having a baby! Planning doesn’t always mean 6+ months in advance. Sometimes, working during nap times and evenings or while baby wearing my son produced the most resonating content.
There comes a time when you need not just a helping hand but a helping team. Outsourcing tasks and hiring a success coach allows you to focus on what truly matters—be it family time or the core of your business. While my expenses are far higher than they’ve ever been, outsourcing has been THE only way I’ve avoided burnout while keeping up a busy business.
Life comes in seasons, especially with a growing child. Being a business owner offers the fantastic gift of flexibility to adapt. Whether changing your schedule around a fussy infant or taking a step back for mental clarity, remember this season is temporary.
Let’s not ignore the postpartum phase. Take time off, enjoy your newborn without the rush. I was able to have 2 months mostly switched off the business (although this workaholic did definitely tinker away at a couple of things!). This isn’t just beneficial for physical recovery but offers a time to reassess and reflect on your business from a new, perhaps wiser perspective. It’s where I got my best business idea yet.
Here’s a not-so-secret secret: you can’t do everything, especially all at once. Prioritise and allow yourself to let some things slide. It’s okay if your home isn’t magazine-ready. You are juggling glass balls and bouncy balls—figure out which ones can afford to drop.
In this journey of being a business and mum, I’ve realised that relieving self-imposed pressures has been a balm to my well-being. Remember your family’s importance and adjust your mindset when feeling frustrated. It’s okay to be perfectly imperfect.
Remember, balancing motherhood and business is not just a dream; it’s a dynamic, ever-evolving reality. Embrace it, tweak it, and most importantly, enjoy the ride!
