If you’ve built a brand, created the graphics, picked the fonts and colours and maybe even done a full mood board… and you’re still not posting, we need to talk about it.
It’s one of the most common things I see from business owners inside my DIY Design My Biz community. Someone will share an absolutely stunning brand: gorgeous logo, beautiful colour palette, the whole thing… and in the same breath, mention they’re still struggling to actually show up.
In this blog, I’m covering why that happens, because it’s not a branding problem. It’s a readiness problem. Or more accurately, it’s a readiness myth.

There’s a difference between feeling ready and being ready. And most of us spend years chasing the feeling, without realising it’s a moving target.
It sounds like this: “I’ll start posting once I have a proper logo.” Then: “I’ll start once the website is done.” Then: “I’ll start once I’ve figured out exactly who I’m targeting.” And your brain (while it’s smart, protective and well-meaning) will always find the next thing to fix before it lets you feel ready.
But here’s what that costs you: every week you spend waiting is another week your ideal clients don’t know you exist. They can’t find you, refer you or book you. Visibility is a prerequisite for everything else.
I spoke to a business owner just recently who said she actually felt more ready at the start of her business than she does now. Which tells you everything you need to know, readiness doesn’t come from experience or preparation. It comes from doing.
The first time you show up, you’ll probably look back and see seventeen things you’d do differently. The hook could’ve been stronger. The caption could’ve been shorter. The graphic could’ve been cleaner.
I’ve been doing more talking-to-camera reels recently, and when I look back at my first one, I can see exactly what I’d change. But I only know that because I posted it. I got to see how it performed, how people responded, what landed and what didn’t. None of that clarity was available to me before I pressed publish.
The bar for being ready is actually pretty low: you need to know enough to take the next step. Not all the steps. Not a five-year plan. Just the next one.

Here’s something I don’t say lightly: your beautiful brand can actually become a hiding place.
When I launched White Deer 12 years ago, I created a grey and white brand. Grey. And. White.
I chose it because I figured no one could hate those colours. It was safe, a little corporate, a little polished… and nothing like me. I talk fast, love colour and am pretty direct.
None of that showed up in my brand because I was protecting myself from rejection.
What followed was years of struggling to show up consistently as a brand I didn’t actually connect with. I moved to hot pink because I thought that’s what my audience wanted. That wasn’t right either.
Eventually I found the purples I use now, and I found them by showing up, getting feedback, and evolving. I would never have landed here if I hadn’t started somewhere.
Every single business I know that’s been around as long as I have has changed. You’re allowed to evolve, sometimes dramatically. Starting with an imperfect brand and evolving it is always better than waiting for perfect. You cannot evolve something you haven’t started.
There’s one more thing I want to say about the pursuit of perfect content: in a world of AI-generated everything, human and real is actually a competitive advantage now.
Your audience isn’t always looking for the most polished, perfectly produced post. Sometimes what stops the scroll is a typo they can laugh at, or a story that feels genuinely lived-in, or a reel that’s clearly just you talking into your phone because you had something to say.
Connection is what grows your business. And sometimes connection lives in the imperfection. So give yourself permission to be a little bit messy.
Maybe even make it a mantra: perfection doesn’t equal connection.
The thing that’s helped me most, and that I want to leave you with, is this: find enough clarity to take the next step. Not all the steps, and not perfect clarity. Just enough for the next one.
If your next step is posting a reel today, what do you need to know?
Roughly who you’re talking to and what you want to say. That’s enough. You will course-correct as you go. And every time you do, you’ll be building the muscle that makes this easier… and building the body of proof that the scary thing didn’t actually kill you.
If you’re finding your brand is part of what’s getting in the way (you don’t have one you believe in, or the one you have doesn’t feel like you) I want to invite you to my free masterclass: Design Tools to Get to $100K Online.
