You know that awkward moment when someone says, “Your website looks so pretty!” and you’re secretly thinking… “Thanks, but I really wish you’d booked in instead”?
Yep, I’ve been there!
We often write copy that sounds polished, maybe even gets a few compliments, but it doesn’t necessarily do what we need it to: CONVERT.
I sat down with copywriter Lucy Bedewi from My Write Hand Woman (who, by the way, gives off total tall-girl vibes despite being 5’4″) to unpack exactly how to write copy that feels like YOU… but also gets people taking action.
Lucy lives the kind of work-life rhythm most of us dream of. She’s out late with friends, still gets her espresso shots in every morning, and usually works in cafes with her bestie instead of sitting home solo. She batches her calls to just one or two days a week, wraps up work by mid-afternoon, and then hits the beach for hours of competitive volleyball.
(Yes, seriously. Like, every day.)
Her business is intentionally designed to fit HER life. And honestly, that’s a reminder in itself: you can build your business your way.
There are no rules.
Lucy always knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur (she was that kid selling chocolate bars and lemonade). After getting fired from her first job just 90 days in, she decided, “Why wait?” and jumped headfirst into copywriting.
She started scrappy: five free clients, messy Google Docs, an ugly Squarespace site (which, fun fact, her friends later told her had a slightly… phallic-looking logo 😬).
But her work spoke for itself.
Her first clients raved, and her business grew from there.
Your brand voice isn’t just about how you speak.
It’s the magical intersection of:
For example: you might love being a little sarcastic and sassy (hello, millennial dry humour), but if your client is navigating something vulnerable…like grief coaching…you may need to dial up the empathy and sensitivity while still holding onto you.
Lucy gives such a brilliant example: imagine you’re chatting with a friend over coffee.
She says, “Ugh, my content isn’t performing.”
You wouldn’t lean in and say, “Here are 5 reasons your content isn’t performing. Reason 1…”
Instead, you’d say something like, “Honestly? You might be posting at the wrong times.”
We need to bring that same conversational flow into our copy. No one wants to read a LinkedIn robot.
Here’s where a lot of us get stuck: we want our copy to sound cool, clever, and original.
But clarity ALWAYS wins.
If your audience has to figure out what you’re saying… they won’t.
Lucy’s advice? Be playful mid-page if you want, but when you get to your CTAs (buttons especially), keep it simple:
We can have fun with headings and storytelling, but don’t sacrifice clarity at the moment of decision.
This tip is pure gold: instead of saying “You’re overwhelmed,” describe what that actually feels like.
“You’re two inches away from opening the window and throwing your laptop out of it.”
RIGHT? That kind of copy makes people nod along and think, “Yes, that’s EXACTLY me.”
The goal is to make your audience feel so seen that they trust you deeply, long before they even hit “buy.”
So many business owners get stuck thinking, “But I’m not that different from others in my industry.”
Lucy challenges us to think bigger:
For example, Lucy offers high-impact VIP Days instead of retainers.
For me? It’s teaching Canva design in an industry full of designers who won’t touch Canva with a 10-foot pole.
Differentiation doesn’t always come from being “the funniest” or “the most sassy.” It comes from how you serve.
If you struggle to define your brand voice (because same!), Lucy suggests choosing 2-3 words that describe it, and make sure one of them is neutral or slightly negative.
For example:
That little bit of tension gives your brand voice dimension. You don’t want to sound like everyone else’s watered-down “approachable, friendly, authentic” brand voice.
And yes, you CAN absolutely use ChatGPT to help pull out patterns from your content and audience feedback too!
At the end of the day, stories build connection. People start to want to buy from you simply because they like you, they trust you, and they feel like they’re part of your world. That’s what makes your offers irresistible.
