Welcome to the world of business where perfectionism can feel like both a hero and a villain. We often find ourselves believing that everything must be flawless before it can see the light of day. But take a moment and imagine what would happen if you let go of this notion and embraced the beauty of imperfection. Your wonderful ideas deserve their moment in the sun, even if they’re not wrapped in a perfect bow.
If you’re tweaking that design for the 273rd time, or you’ve got an idea for a course but just can’t seem to finish it to absolute perfection? If you nodded along furiously, you’re in the right place!
Perfectionism is a sneaky enemy. You might think that perfecting every detail of your business will lead to better outcomes, but in reality, it’s often the opposite. When you spend countless hours refining a Canva design or rewriting a course module, you delay progress. Perfectionism stifles growth, wastes precious time, and ultimately prevents your business from reaching its full potential.
One of the most glaring downsides of perfectionism is the waste of time and resources. Picture this: you have a fantastic idea for a social media post. You could spend half an hour polishing it up and getting it out there, or you could agonise for four hours over every minute detail. The extra time might only yield one more “like.” Is that worth it? Likely not. Learning when something is ‘good enough’ allows you to focus on more significant tasks.
When perfectionism takes hold, opportunities slip through your fingers. Maybe you had a brilliant course idea but held back because it wasn’t perfect. Think about it – if I had waited for my course DIY Design My Biz to be flawless (or even fully written) before I launched it then it likely wouldn’t have generated six figures for my business. Embrace the launch as a learning process. Refine as you go, and you’ll find that imperfect progress is better than no progress.
During my design studies, a lecturer introduced me to the concept of “happy accidents.” We often stumble upon the best solutions when we’re not forcing perfection from the get-go. Trial and error, experimenting, and learning from mistakes are crucial. If you’re afraid of making mistakes, you’ll miss out on discovering innovative ideas. So, let down your guard and welcome those happy accidents.
You’re now aware of how perfectionism can hinder your growth, but what can you do about it? Here are some actionable tips:
Using a timer can be a game-changer. Whether it’s on your phone or a fancy gravity timer like mine, setting a timer limits how long you spend on a task. For a social media post, cap it at 10 minutes. This constraint forces you to focus and prevents you from descending into the rabbit hole of perfection.
An accountability buddy can be your secret weapon. Tell someone—whether it’s a business friend, coach, or even your significant other—your goals and deadlines. They can keep you on track and push you to launch your course or reach out for that podcast feature, even if things aren’t perfect.
Progress is the key to growth. Celebrate it, no matter how small. Progress allows for experimentation and learning from mistakes, which in turn speeds up growth. The phrase “done is better than perfect” should be your new mantra.
By now, I hope you’re feeling empowered to loosen the grip of perfectionism and embrace imperfection in your business. Remember, “imperfect progress” can still propel your business forward. Your audience will appreciate authenticity and genuine effort over picture-perfect content any day. So, take that leap of faith, post your drafts, launch your courses, and grow through the process.
