How can we nurture our nervous systems when we run our own business? When things feel like they’re constantly GOING.
In this episode, occupational therapist Mia Poklepovich discusses the unique challenges faced by women in business and the importance of prioritizing well-being. We cover effective strategies for managing stress, navigating challenging situations, and finding healthy coping mechanisms.
Mia emphasizes the importance of recognizing and managing anxiety and stress responses. To achieve this, consider incorporating mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga into your daily routine. Set aside dedicated time for stress-relief activities to help manage and alleviate feelings of overwhelm.
Understanding your productivity peaks and lows can optimize your work schedule. Mia suggests tailoring work schedules to individual productivity peaks. For example, if you are most productive in the morning, prioritize your most important tasks during this time. Similarly, if your energy tends to dip in the afternoons, allocate this time for less demanding activities.
One strategy for managing stress is to focus on controlling what can be controlled. Set boundaries around email checking and plan your schedule in advance. This practice can help create a sense of structure and reduce feelings of chaos or unpredictability in your workday. Also continually remind yourself that you can’t be in control of everything – release those things you can never change.
Consider the impact of your sensory environment on your well-being. Pay attention to factors such as sleep quality, nutrition, and workspace setup. Prioritise a comfortable and conducive workspace that supports your focus and creativity. And don’t forget to make sure that you are getting enough restful sleep and nourishing your body with healthy meals to maintain your energy levels throughout the day.
Mia highlights the importance of engaging in small, positive actions to make a significant difference in managing stress. This could include taking short breaks to go for a walk, spending time in nature, or practicing gratitude exercises. These small actions can help counteract the negative effects of stress and promote a more positive mindset.
Difficult situations are inevitable when running a business so it’s important to prepare (as much as you can) to navigate such challenges. Look for opportunities to develop resilience and coping strategies that will help you navigate the inevitable ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
Recognise when you need support! Establish a support network of mentors, peers, or professional communities where you can seek guidance, share experiences, and receive encouragement during challenging times.
By incorporating these practical tips into your daily routine, you can prioritise your well-being as a woman in small business, ultimately enhancing your ability to navigate the demands of entrepreneurship while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Remember, your well-being is your most valuable asset, and investing in it is essential for long-term success as a business owner.
