So, your business is ready to make its first hire? Or maybe you’ve hired before but are ready to do it better! In this episode, I chat with HR Expert, Amy Christopherson, on the critical aspects of hiring new team and creating a successful onboarding process for new employees.
When hiring it’s important to proactively lay down solid policies and procedures tp ensure a smooth onboarding journey. The goal here? Making sure that from day one, your new employees know exactly what’s what, where’s where, and who’s who.
Ever wondered about the exact cost of getting a new team member up to speed? Amy’s got the answers. It takes patience, resources, and a sprinkle of magic to achieve around 90% efficiency from a new employee – we’re talking 8 to 10 months! And for the fresh graduates hitting the grand stage? Amy suggests allowing 18-months to 2-year for peak performance to really solidify.
This means if the staff member is a good fit we REALLY want to encourage them to stick around or we risk wasting a lot of valuable time and money in the business. This next point will help!
Here’s a delightful nugget from Amy’s treasure trove of info – onboarding begins from the exact moment your new employee gives a nod to joining your team. We need to build rapport, make them feel important, and ensure they’re as informed about the job as soon as possible. This will not only help them slot into the team easier, but also mean they’re less likely to be poached before they even start with you.
We all love a good checklist, don’t we? Amy emphasizes the vital role of induction and employee value proposition in setting the stage for your new star performer. It’s like handing them an all-access backstage pass to the show, but with a lot less drama.
It’s not rocket-science: treating people like people, not robots. The well-being of your employees has got to be front and center. Because let’s face it, happy employees equal a successful show. Invest your genuine care and time into your employees as human-beings. This will help them enjoy the job more and mean you can make sure their career goals and workplace enjoyment are being met.
Need some hiring advice? It’s all about deeply understanding your needs and what you really require from someone in this position. If you’re not clear you won’t be able to articulate the requirements and risk hiring the wrong person.
Also think about where your ideal hire is hanging out. If you’re looking to hire a mum part-time, they might be in Facebook mums groups or Instagram, rather than trawling Seek!
